The Men Moving Towards framework was designed to create an open and flexible space for young people to explore transitions from boyhood to manhood and values for living independently, add to a positive sense of self, and consider how gender expectations shape their experiences. Rather than following a rigid curriculum, the approach encouraged responsive facilitation, allowing themes such as emotional literacy, resilience, and relationship-building to emerge through activities that felt most engaging and relevant in the moment.

Sessions took place during the young people’s free time, meaning engagement was often shaped by their mood and interests in the moment. This put more strain on semi-planned timings, but on this occasion, Boamena was in a position to double the number of sessions to accommodate the evolving needs of the group.

Creating a space where young people felt comfortable enough to explore deep personal themes, particularly as the spaces were comforting ones, so they could also become understandably distracted. Balancing engagement with depth required careful facilitation, keeping discussions open yet focused.

During a session that was changed to a pool hall with little notice, the Boamena Movement Manual helped me to adapt well. We transformed the game into a conversation about healthy and unhealthy relationships and personal values. The red balls represented healthy values—trust, honesty, respect—while the yellow balls symbolized unhealthy patterns—control, isolation, or emotional suppression. A foul shot? That became a moment to explore how some values, when taken to extremes, could shift from healthy to harmful. As the game unfolded, one participant reflected on how the pressure to be "independent" as a man might lead to unintentional disconnection from his support network. He had previously shared his dream of moving into his own place and working towards a career he was passionate about. Through the session, he realized that while independence was important, it needed to be balanced with the ability to maintain meaningful relationships. Using curiosity, communication, and trust would be essential in ensuring he stayed connected to others while pursuing his goals. By linking relationship values directly to their aspirations, the group saw emotional intelligence not as an abstract concept but as a skill set that could shape their future success and happiness.
